Internet, phones offline in Killarney

At least 172 Killarney Garden businesses and residents are battling after their landlines and internet connections went down.

This comes after severe vandalism struck an Openserve distribution cabinet earlier this month, resulting in a total blackout for some internet and landline users.

According to Maggy Skors who works at a business in the area, phone lines have been down since Monday 3 February, which has kept businesses offline. “We have complained to our internet service provider Telkom and the reason given for the disruption in service was because apparently the box in the street has been vandalised. This is negatively affecting the businesses because we are unable to send emails and make phone calls,” Skors said. According to her, Telkom said it would take three to five working days to be fixed.

The senior specialist for media relations at Openserve, Pynee Chetty, which is the provisioning division for the Telkom group, confirmed the incident, explaining that due to the vandalism of the street distribution cabinet, all customers served by it have been without connectivity.

“We have received communication regarding customers in the larger parts of Killarney Gardens which have been offline for a few weeks. The cabinet was vandalised to the point that the repair will entail a fair amount of civil work prior to the cabinet being replaced. This process cannot happen overnight. We first need to replace everything that was damaged and progressively connect the cables,” Chetty said.

Businesses and residents will only be able to access their internet and landlines in approximately three weeks if all goes well, according to Chetty. Asked if Openserve has any plans to safeguard the cabinets, Chetty said that it’s impossible to fully secure them.

“Unfortunately, outdoor infrastructure is quite difficult to secure as it is exposed to vulnerabilities and criminal elements; however, Openserve will keep its ISP partners informed as the restoration process progresses,” he said.
