Learner hosts talent show

Scottsville High School is set to come alive during a talent show at the end of May.

That is, of course, if the banning of social events with more than 100 people is lifted.

The talent show is the brain child of Grade 10 learner Centen Denster who proposed his idea to principal Henry Hockey.

“This idea came to me after realising that the school does not have enough supplies like copy and toilet paper,” he says.

“I took it upon myself to do something to help because I benefit from the supplies.

Denster says the fact that a lot of parents struggle to pay their children’s school fees also contributes to the problem.

During the talent show, various local entertainers will perform.

“We will have local dancers and musicians who have agreed to perform at the show for free in order to help the school,” Denster explains.

Denster says Hockey has been supportive of his idea from the beginning and even gave him a few ideas of what might work.

“Principal Hockey has been offering me support from the beginning when I told him about the idea. He has been very helpful.”

He says that some of his fellow learners have also shown interest in taking part.

“I have had some of them coming to me asking if it is okay if they join and perform.”

Hockey says he appreciates the initiative that Denster has taken in helping the school out.

“When he came to me and told me that he has noticed the problem and is willing to help by bringing some of his contacts together and hosting this, I was happy. What is more pleasing is that other learners are also willing to lend a helping hand.”

Hockey says he always encourages his learners to try and change situations they are not happy with instead of complaining about it. “I am proud that he took the initiative to help the school out while showcasing his talent as a musician and dancer at the same time,” he concludes.
