‘Lend a helping hand’

A Kraaifontein woman who saw the constantly growing need to assist families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic urged the public to lend a helping hand where they can.

Vanessa Velati of The Giving Closet, an initiative that donates over 35 food hampers weekly to families who have witnessed first-hand the cruelty of the pandemic, says she has been lending a hand to those in need for a long time.

“From as far back as 2007, I have been assisting where I could, most frequently supplying school children with uniform and stationery,” she says.

“Recently, with the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic, the constant rise in unemployment and loss of income has pushed me to formally give birth to The Giving Closet.”

Currently, in the process of registering The Giving Closet as a non-profit organisation, Velati receives some help from residents as well as other organisations in the community.

“The support from fellow community members has been amazing, people open up their hearts to help others and that is what communities need.”

The donations are carefully separated into smaller quantities before being handed over.

“The hampers are prepared in a hygienic environment. Lockdown regulations are taken into consideration throughout the process until the beneficiaries receive their supplies.”

Teamwork makes the dream work for this initiative as it is constantly working with other organisations to reach more beneficiaries.

“Whenever other organisations have supplies left, they reach out to find out if we need anything and vice versa.

“This works well because we all get to reach more people in need and make sure the food parcels do not go to waste.”

Velati urges Kraaifontein residents to help where they can or get involved with similar organisations.
