Matrics prep for CAT exam

In an effort to prepare Grade 12 Computer Applications Technology (CAT) learners for the final exams, the I-CAN Centre in Elsies River hosted a Digital Spring School during the recent school holidays.

Learners had the opportunity to attend these classes from 1 to 4 October.

In a statement, executive director of Genesis and centre manager of the I-CAN Centre, Llewellyn Scholtz, says learners gained immense knowledge and skills as the Digital Spring School is a game-changer towards the subject. “The CAT subject is where students learn about computers, cyber safety, networking and productivity applications. The subject plays a pivotal role in empowering high school learners with digital literacy and some advanced features for the workplace.

“The game-changer project allows Grade 12 learners to obtain Microsoft International Certification, a renowned certificate for the ICT industry. This will address the unemployment issue after schooling and assist learners with furthering their studies. Many youth in disadvantaged communities across the province face challenges with domestic violence and substance abuse during school holidays. This results in high drop-out rates and youth feeling hopeless regarding their future.”

Scholtz says that 27 matriculants from the southern suburbs, northern suburbs, central Cape Town and south peninsula attended the Digital Spring School. “A miraculous 100% pass rate was obtained from all learners. The unique project can determine and accelerate an [improvement in] student results.

“The project was funded by the host, Genesis Community IT Initiative, a non-profit organisation located in the I-CAN Centre.
