More ‘poachers’ caught with plants
arrest

Another two alleged poachers were arrested outside Durbanville for the illegal possession of 235 protected and unprotected plants.

This came shortly after more than 2 000 bulb plants, or geophytes, which were rescued from poachers in Durbanville in April, were replanted in the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.

The bulbs were replanted by the City of Cape Town’s biodiversity management branch after they were confiscated by CapeNature officials from poachers on Tygerbergvalley Road on 16 April.

These plant species are often illegally harvested as they are believed to have medicinal use.

The species include Drimia elata (jeukbol, eaten by Cape grysbok), Haemanthus coccineus (blood flower), Tulbaghia capensis (wild garlic or wildedagga) and Asparagus plant species (wild asparagus and katdoring).

According to Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson of Durbanville police, the two men were arrested on Sunday 3 May at 11:00 in Adderley Road.

They were arrested for the possession of two bags full of plants – 225 wild garlic plants and 10 wild onion plants – without the necessary authorisation, he said.

The plants were allegedly stolen on the farm Diemersdal.

The plants were again handed over to the City of Cape Town to be replanted in a conservation area in the city.

The alleged poachers were also charged with contravening the Covid-19 regulations. They appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 5 May.
