Only four matrics pass

Beauvallon Secondary School in Valhalla Park obtained a 14.8% pass rate for the 2019 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

The school, which is located in the middle of gang territory, achieved the lowest pass rate among surrounding schools.

According to the provincial education department of the 27 learners who wrote the exam, only four had passed.

Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the learner population at the school is 197.

“The school records high failure rates in Business Studies (11% pass rate), Geography (14.8% pass rate) and Mathematical Literacy (55.6% pass rate) which all attributed to the final result of 14.8%. They only offer seven subjects at the school,” she explains.

Hammond says the school did not have any matric learners in 2017 and 2018.

“The reason why there were no matriculants the past two years is because the learner numbers were so low in those grades that it would not justify the teaching posts to teach specific subjects. Learners were therefore transferred to John Ramsay High School. 26 learners were promoted to Grade 12,” she says.

Going forward, Hammond says the department’s metro north district will analyse the results more carefully.

“Intervention strategies will be discussed with the school in the weeks to come.”

The school’s acting principal Leonard Jansen says the result was very disappointing as the staff put in extra hours to help the learners.

“It all boils down to discipline, studying and commitment from the learner. As teachers we stayed at school until 21:00 for the latest to equip learners for the final exams. We held spring and winter schools to get them ready, but there was a lack of commitment,” says Jansen.

“We can’t always blame socio-economic issues. For the new academic year we would like for parents to come on board and support their children. The learners need encouragement. In this case there are three strings to a learner’s success and these include learner, parent and teacher support.”

For the current year the school has 26 matric learners.

“We are working on programs to improve this year’s results.”
