Organisation looks after the elderly

The most vulnerable people in society need to be taken care of and the non-profit organisation Ngomsu Lethu has taken it upon themselves to do just that in their community.

Shireen de Villiers, one of the founders of Ngomsu Lethu, which means Our Future, is a businesswoman who says she always had the urge to give something back to her community.

“Our aim is to reach out to the pioneers in our community. It’s very sad how some of our seniors are not cared for by their children and are forced to take care and responsibility for their grandkids.

“In some cases, even grown grandchildren who are unemployed and sadly addicted to drugs are dependent on them.

“Ngomsu Lethu wants to get them cared for at a senior day care for a few hours maybe twice or thrice a week. At this centre they are taught arts and crafts and gardening. There are also wellness programmes, aerobics and yoga. The seniors in Belhar are so happy that they are taken care of,” says De Villiers.

It is not only the elders that benefit from the organisation’s good work. “We also have various programmes for our youth, and school learners to occupy themselves with voluntary work within the community and we are encouraging the youth to start entrepreneurship initiatives.

“If we get more local business people to help us we will be able to reach more of the youth,” says De Villiers.

On Saturday 9 November the organisation presents a 5km walk for seniors in Belhar and all the seniors are welcome. Entry fee is R20 and the seniors will be served breakfast.

For more information call De Villiers on 071 250 3930.
