Pointsmen on call if lights go out again

A total of 15 major intersections in the northern suburbs will hence have traffic points men on duty in case of any continued load shedding this year.

While many traffic lights have utility power supply systems that allow them to be operational during loadshedding, this is not the case across the city.

“To this end, the City identified 74 major city-wide intersections, that are flagged for point-duty by traffic, Metro Police and law enforcement departments when the areas in question are experiencing loadshedding,” said executive Mayor Dan Plato last week.

These, according to the City’s traffic services, would be the roads, worst affected during power outages, especially during peak traffic hours. In Goodwood and Bellville the following roads were identified:

. Robert Sobukwe Road and 35th Avenue;

. Robert Sobukwe and De La Rey Roads;

. Jan Van Riebeeck and Voortrekker Roads

. Halt and Voortrekker Roads;

. Robert Sobukwe Road and Symphony Way;

. Robert Sobukwe and Caledon Roads;

. Strand Road and the R300;

Plato said the City will try its utmost to ensure that these affected intersections are managed, but that it would be dependent on staff numbers.
