Project brings hope to learners and teachers

On Friday, the Days of Hope organisation brought their initiative to Ruyterwacht Preparatory School.

The day consisted of entertainment organised by 1 Million Strong, which included a motivational speech by a South African body-building champion, a magic show, a soccer skills workshop, a mindfulness session by I Meditate Africa, and musical entertainment by a DJ.

The entertainment was focused on developing life skills in order to teach the children the power of making positive choices.

“Our goal is to go into schools and to provide a support network for learners and teachers,” says volunteer Kate Haywood. “It’s all about supporting the learners and teachers on a long-term basis.”

Days of Hope, which is an amalgamation of various organisations including Ladles of Love and 1 Million Strong, also provided the 720 learners with a healthy, home-cooked meal.

The organisation has entered into a partnership with the school and has committed itself to a weekly feeding scheme.

This is aimed at catering to all the children who attend school without a packed lunch on a regular basis.

Ruyterwacht Preparatory School is the third school participating in the initiative, with the other schools being Delta Primary School in Steenberg and Prestwich Street Primary School in Greenpoint.

According to Ruyterwacht Preparatory School principal, Helanda Viljoen, she is excited and overwhelmed by the initiative.

“I am so thankful for the support that they are giving not only our learners, but our teachers as well,” says Viljoen.

“The support is so valuable, especially because of the area in which we teach. By the end of the week many of the teachers feel drained,” explains Viljoen.

Despite the challenges faced by the school, Viljoen proudly shares that the school had a 99% pass rate last year.

“Our staff is a young bunch, but they work incredibly hard,” says the principal.

The initiative was supported by volunteers from Ladles of Love, 1 Million Strong and Holiday Inn.

“This initiative is volunteer funded and run,” explains Haywood.
