Quick reaction to potholes

Less than a week after TygerBurger published an article, (“Calls to fix potholes”, 28/08), potholes in Salberau Avenue, Elsies River were fixed.

The aftermath of the winter season gives rise to the formation of potholes as it is directly related to the heavy rainfall. The age and condition of the roads also plays a huge role.

During a visit to the area on Wednesday 4 September, a resident of Moon Close which is off Salberau Avenue said City officials attended to the potholes on Friday 30 August.

Ward 28 councillor Christopher Jordaan said all roads in Elsies River are scheduled for repairs: “The City’s transport management centre was waiting for the roads to dry. It was difficult to do repairs in the rainy season as it will just pop out when reinstatement is done during wet weather.”

Zubeida Louw from Salberau (in Elsies River) said she broke her ankle in December last year as a result of a pothole she had tripped over.

“These potholes are a big problem. I was walking in Halt Road when I tripped and broke my ankle. That day there was no one to help me so I had to go to the closest pharmacy.

“I received medication and the following day my foot was swollen.

“My husband took me to N1 City Hospital where the doctor informed me that I had broken my ankle as the ligament was torn,” said Louw.

About two weeks ago, Louw said she witnessed a youngster fall off a motorbike as he was trying to avoid a pothole in Salberau Avenue.

“By trying to dodge the pothole he swerved and fell off the motorbike. This happened in front of my house. I ran out and helped that boy. Shame, he was in shock so I gave him sugar water then asked him to give me his mother’s contact number so I could inform her that he needed to be fetched.”

The Mayco member for transport Felicity Purchase said any person who damaged their vehicle or incurred bodily harm due to damaged infrastructure such as potholes, can submit a claim via the claims department.

“Such claim will then be investigated by the relevant depot or district office, whereby the findings will be referred back to the claims department, who will liaise directly with the claimant.”
