Rape survivor speaks

Following an invitation from Sheigh Abduragmaan Alexander, Reverend Tanelle Welff-Dixon recently spoke at an outreach event hosted at the Masjidul Quds Mosque in Gatesville.

Welff-Dixon, an international speaker, former American Christian radio host and a representative of the South African Religious Forum (Sarf) was accompanied by several Christian women from Kraaifontein who were excited to be in a mosque – for many for the very first time. She addressed approximately 800 Muslim women and spoke about the differences and similarities of the Christian and Muslim faiths and highlighted the central theme of love being the common thread that binds these Abrahamic religions.

As a seven-time rape survivor, Welff-Dixon spoke about the scourge of gender-based violence, domestic violence and rape against women in general, which affects all women irrespective of their faith.

The event formed part of a bigger project to create bridges between the different faiths and similar engagements are planned in the future in support of the South African government’s Thuma Mina (Send Me) campaign, which was launched by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the State of the Nation (Sona) address in parliament earlier this year.
