Relief provided for Dunoon

With Dunoon identified as a Covid-19 hotspot, Astron Energy, which operates the nearby Milnerton oil refinery, has stepped in to try and assist the community during this crisis.

CEO Jonathan Molapo said the company, which also holds the local license for the Caltex brand, has been contributing to Covid-19 relief efforts across the country but has made Dunoon a priority.

“More than 30 000 people live in the area. Many of our employees, and those of the contracting companies who work at the refinery, live in Dunoon, and we have increased our interventions in a major way,” Molapo said.

In consultation with NGOs and community leaders, more than R500 000 has been invested by Astron Energy in a range of initiatives in Dunoon.

These include 5 000 meals supplied in partnership with Rise Against Hunger, with masks and educational pamphlets distributed in partnership with the Amy Foundation.

In addition, R50 000 worth of hand sanitisers has been distributed with the local clinic supported with food parcels, sanitisers and hand wash stations.

Astron Energy’s social investment advisor, Winny Dubazane, said the company is continuing to explore new ways of supporting the Dunoon community. “We have a substantial history of involvement with Dunoon and we are in this for the long haul.”

Natalie Watlington, provincial health department spokesperson, said the department has a targeted hotspot plan in place which includes the following:

  • Health response including case management, community screening and testing and the appropriate referral for quarantine and isolation.
  • Economic response including assisting and mapping businesses, ensuring social distancing in the workplace and places of economic activity.
  • Safety response that includes the police and Western Cape Government and City of Cape Town traffic deployment and law enforcement.
  • Food security and humanitarian response that includes the departments of agriculture, social development and relevant City initiatives.
  • Transport and public response that includes interventions with respect to movement of people, and public transport, among others.

“As we enter into our winter season, we remind the community that the most important thing we can all do during this pandemic is to follow the golden rules. Keep your hands clean, washing them regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. Keep your distance from other people. Sneeze into a tissue or the corner of your arm and stay home if you are sick,” Watlington said.
