School holds own elections

Forest Village Leadership Academy held its very first learner elections last week to highlight the country’s national elections.

Learners had to cast their vote for one of five choices they felt could help bring about a positive change in the school.

Grade 6 and 7 learners tirelessly campaigned for each of the causes during their lunch breaks, giving learners ample opportunity to discuss, debate and make an informed decision about which option to vote for.

Options included wearing civvies on your birthday, three breaks a day and swop your teacher for a day, says Brendin Morratts, acting head of department at the school.

Kaytlyn Minnie coordinated the voting proceedings.

Class lists were used as the voter’s roll, recycled boxes transformed into ballot boxes and a team of dedicated teachers were the officials and electoral officers.

The aim was to highlight current and relevant events happening in the country and develop learners into young responsible adults who will someday take up their responsibility when they have an opportunity to vote in a national election.
