Several families from Wallacedene in Kraaifontein are seeking a place to rest their heads this evening after a fire destroyed their homes earlier today (Thursday 13 February).

It is unknown what started the fire at the France informal settlement.

City of Cape Town fire and rescue officials were deployed to the scene to douse the flames.

"At 09:24 the City's fire and rescue service responded to informal structures alight in Mfeketo Street, Phase 9 Wallacedene. Brackenfell's fire crew arrived first on scene and reported numerous structures burning," says the City's fire and rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse.

He adds fire crews from as far as Belhar and Ottery came to assist, which saw nine firefighting appliances and 38 staff on the scene.

"One firefighter got injured and was taken to a nearby hospital while a second firefighter was treated on the scene. A large number of structures were destroyed and people were displaced. The fire was extinguished at 12:45," says Carelse.
