Shopping ‘safe’ - malls

With uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 safety measures in place at shopping malls, Milnerton and Table View malls have assured the community that preventative protocols are in place.

This comes as malls in the areas are slowly returning to pre-lockdown levels of foot traffic and residents questioned precautionary measures.

One of the most popular malls in Table View, Bayside Mall, said the health and safety of everyone visiting and working in the centre remains their primary focus.

Aadilah Ryklief, Bayside Mall’s centre manager, added that they continue to ensure that the mall is safe, secure, and clean by following stringent safety and hygiene protocols on an ongoing basis.

“All trading tenants have their own safety and hygiene measures in place which includes sanitising of hands upon entering stores, disinfecting of trolleys, trolley bays and baskets and distance markers to ensure social distancing.

“All staff have been issued with protective gear to further curb the spread of the virus and to keep them safe. We have also aimed to continuously communicate with shoppers through informative signage and posters throughout the centre as well as social media campaigns to inform and educate the community,” Ryklief said.

A regular shopper at Bayside Mall, Hanlie Beukes, said that although the mall is following the necessary safety measures, customers tend to be the problem.

“I’ve seen this first-hand when going shopping at the mall. All workers are equipped with sanitisers, masks, face shields and gloves, but the shoppers do not adhere to the rules. Some of them walk into the mall without face masks and refuse to be sanitised. If we are going to beat this virus, we all need to follow the regulations,’’ Beukes said.

Vanessa Herbst, Canal Walk’s marketing manager, said that post the announcement regarding Covid-19, Canal Walk is proactively addressing the challenges of the Covid-19 situation with the health and safety of everyone at the mall as their top priority.

“We are being proactive and diligent in protecting our shoppers, tenants and employees, following the World Health Organisation’s recommended preventative protocol, and keeping in continuous contact with the relevant local health authorities.

We have introduced additional precautionary measures for the safety of guests and enhanced cleaning procedures, which includes the meticulous cleaning and disinfecting of the common areas of the mall, especially touchpoints such as lifts, escalators, handrails, entrances and customer care desks,” Herbst explained.

Canal Walk has also provided extra sanitiser stations throughout the mall to assist with hygiene practices. The wearing of masks in the centre is compulsory.

In addition, Sable Square in Milnerton has followed strict guidelines as set out by government lockdown regulations.

Malls in the Table View and Milnerton areas have the following safety measures in place:

  • Signage throughout the malls relating to Covid-19.
  • Wearing a face mask is compulsory.
  • Hand sanitising stations are available at all entrances and throughout the malls.
  • Social distancing indicators in lifts, lift lobbies and ATM’s.
  • Dedicated cleaners in all public toilets and sanitising done every hour.
  • Security is assisting in making sure that no person enters the mall without a mask.
  • Ensuring retailers are adhering to regulations and all individual stores have the correct procedures in place for shoppers entering their stores.
  • Temp scanning and hand sanitizing are done prior to entering any of the retail stores.
  • Tap and go payment facilities to ensure that the process remains as touch-less as possible.
  • The number of people inside the centre are closely monitored and limited where necessary.
  • Automatic issue of parking tickets on arrival at parking boom.
  •  Parking attendants stationed at equipment to clean and sanitise on a regular basis.
