‘Soccer is therapeutic’

A Bonteheuwel teenager has been scouted to play in the annual International Youth Football tournament in Dallas Texas next year.

Jamie-Lee Visagie (17), who attends Arcadia High School, says he is “over the moon” about his selection.

He started playing soccer when he was eight.

Jamie-Lee describes the sport as therapeutic: “If you play sport, all your problems go away, all the negative thoughts. Sport brings positivity in your life.

“I feel overwhelmed by my selection because there are many other players that could’ve been selected, but they chose me.”

His journey began in 2009 when he started playing for Sea Point Swifts Athletic Football Club. In 2012, he moved over to Phantom Orient.

“Both teams are based in Bonteheuwel and play on the Metropolitan Sports Field. In 2013 I started playing for First National (FN) Rangers, based in Maitland, an I’m still playing for them.”

He practices a minimum of twice a week: “But sometimes if it’s a busy schedule ahead, then we practice three to four times a week.”

Soccer, he says, is a tool he uses to express himself.

“I feel that it is the only place that I can truly express myself and have fun while doing it. The position I play is centre-back.”

He aims to set an example to the youth of Bonteheuwel and other areas through sport: “I would like to inspire them through sport because sport is one of the ways out of your surroundings and can take you to bigger and better places just by using your talent.

“So to every young person out there ... find your talent and then produce your talent.”

His mother, Michelle Visagie, says she is tremendously proud of her son’s selection.

“Jamie-Lee has always been dedicated to soccer since a very young age. This is a very big accomplishment for him. I’m happy he has chosen to make something of his life and not get involved in the wrong things. In order to raise the money for him to attend, we’ll be hosting fundraisers to make his dream come true.”

The first fundraiser will take place at Athlone High School on Friday 27 September.
