Murray Boast (16) of Milnerton Golf Club was placed third in the Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series tournament at Royal Cape Golf Club on Sunday 13 October.
Murray, a Melkbosstrand resident and Grade 11 learner at Milnerton High School, says he is happy with his achievement, but feels he could have done better.
“I think I did quite well though I would have wanted to do much better. I’m happy with what I achieved,” he says explaining that the winner of their tournament qualified for the Bridge Junior Series regional final, where he will compete for the ultimate prize – an all-expenses-paid trip to the North and South Junior Championship at Pinehurst, in the United States of America (USA), in July 2020.
Murray says he enjoys golf, a trait he picked from his grandfather at a very young age.
“My grandfather played the sport and he made me a member of the golf club. Since becoming a member I was messing around with the sport not knowing what I was doing, but I took it seriously when I was about 12-years-old. Since then I have taken part in a lot of competitions. Every Sunday I play a league at my club and I enjoy it a lot,” he says.
Murray says what he enjoys the most about golf is that it is a personal sport. “You can work on it as much as you want, and you can push yourself as much as you want. You don’t have to depend on anyone. It is your effort, you have to be disciplined about it and you achieve great results,” he says explaining that since he is still studying, he must find the balance between his practises and school work.
“Sometimes it is tough to practise, especially during exams as I have to put effort into my studies. However, what is really important is finding the balance between the two,” he says, adding that his favourite subject is tourism.
