TLC students ready for jobs

As the year draws to an end, many people celebrate their achivements and look at what they need to do in the future. Celebrating their milestones is exactly what students from TLC Outreach Projects did at Dolphin Beach Hotel on Friday 22 November.

TLC Outreach Projects is a registered non-profit organisation in Table View.

Eleven students from the organisation’s Skills Development Centre graduated after completing a 12-month course.

TLC founder Colleen Pietersen says it was a very good year.

“The graduates completed life skills with a manual of 12 modules, paint techniques, computers, and Bible truth among other things. The students have their CVs, certificates and they are ready for jobs,” says Pietersen adding that many of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds, from the streets, are school drop-outs and some had drug problems.

“Given where they come from and their circumstances, they have really achieved a lot. We have equipped them, now they need to find jobs. Students need to drop CVs at different places. The students are very proud of themselves; they have learnt a lot and they understand life much better. They have matured a lot which I think is very important,” she says.

Pietersen says what makes TLC different is that they run a skills centre and students don’t pay for training. “They get a breakfast treat and lunch. They are not under any pressure, they need to do what needs to be done. We are also connecting with Matrix for drug rehab patients. So, there is a lot that we give them that can sustain them,” she says.

The organisation will recruit again in January and classes will start in February.
