Fuming residents have taken their concerns to social media last week after waste was spotted at the Erica Road outlet grid in Table View.
The waste, which has been labelled as a health hazard by residents in the Milnerton and Table View areas, has since been removed from the outlet grid.
However, how the waste ended up in the grid is still unknown.
A resident, Nicola Hendricks, says the stench was unbearable and the City of Cape Town needs to launch a full investigation into the matter.
“This is really unacceptable. We have no idea what health hazards the waste holds and whether it can be toxic to the surrounding areas. This is also not the first time this happended. When contacting the City, they just give a long list of things to avoid, but there is no real solution. We have to step up our game and demand basic service delivery,” Hendricks says.
Other residents posted photos and videos on the respective community groups on social media, demanding action to be taken.
Ward 55 councillor, Fabian Ah-Sing, took matters into his own hands after being alerted of the waste at the outlet grid.
“On Thursday I was alerted to a worrying situation at the Erica Road outlet grid. Even though this area is technically not part of ward 55, it does affect us. I decided to see how I can assist,” he says.
He requested the City’s Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg, for assistance to resolve the concern.
“As usual, she immediately assisted and ensured that the relevant officials attend to the situation. The dirt was removed and the situation will be monitored. I have requested that I be informed as to the cause of the concern. Once this information is made available to me, I will make it available to the residents of ward 55,” Ah-Sing says.
