Unhygienic shops

In the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Brooklyn residents claim they are held hostage in their homes due to unhygienic shops in Koeberg Road posing a danger to their health.

The residents have described the shops as ‘cesspools’ with no health precautions in place.

According to community activist, Fay Vogel, the shops in Koeberg Road are not taking the coronavirus seriously.

“We are being held hostage in our homes whilst it’s business as usual on Koeberg Main Road in Brooklyn.

The butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker - all in one shop.

It’s a disaster waiting to happen. Health needs to step in here and operations needs to be done.

All the pubs under Milnerton jurisdiction has complied with the laws as set out by the President. All needs to abide by the rules not just certain businesses. It’s unfair and will be disregarded by those who do adhere, if the law breakers continue with business as usual. Who must enforce these laws?” Vogel asked.

Vogel added that illegal braai spots on Koeberg Road are causing mayhem with authorities turning a blind eye.

“As residents, we have to protect ourselves as the number of coronavirus cases are increasing every day. Unfortunately, I cannot sit still and watch my area deteriorate, which ultimately poses a much more higher risk for the coronavirus to spread. The uncollected refuse piling up in our streets is another concern. We demand for action to be taken to sort this out,” she said.

Ward 55 councillor, Fabian Ah-Sing responded to Vogel’s allegations, saying that Koeberg Road is not the only place where this happens.

Ah-Sing added, “Unfortunately, these things happen all around the country and is not only subject to Koeberg Road. As with all things, there will always be those who do not follow laws.

To curb this trend on Koeberg Road, I have spoken to a senior inspector who has advised that he will liaise with the City’s liquor unit to arrange for a joint operation which will concentrate on all pubs on Koeberg Road, Brooklyn who are not adhering to the new regulations. Law enforcement will assist in this operation and the joint operation will be implemented as soon as feasibly possible. It must also be noted that police must play their part. Residents are urged to also report these breaches of the new regulations to the police.”
