Watch now in control

The Parow Valley neighbourhood watch just launched their brand new control room from which they will operate from going forward.

The room is located in a building owned by the City of Cape Town, just off Duncan Street, Parow Valley, says chairperson, Yusuf “Joe” Mallie.

He told TygerBurger last week that from this base, their new home with the team of 15 patrollers who will man the control room, will be able to respond to incidents of crime in the area.

He says at first it was difficult to control crime-related situations among the patrollers, and that they, therefore, decided it is best to have a central point to work from.

“We then came up with the idea of a control room from where we can run everything. This way, everybody on patrol can talk to one person,” he explains.

He says thankfully all of the role-players are on board.

“We are now linked to the Metro Police. Apart from this, we are also in direct contact with the Parow police, Law Enforcement and security companies.”

Mallie says one of those private security companies is the Goodwood Armed Patrols (GAP), who has provided the control room with a panic button, intercom and radio control access. They will also assist with providing back-up, if and where possible, Mallie says.

He says with this new arrangement, they hope to deliver a better service to the community. “From here we can now monitor the entire area with the help of the CCTV cameras and the license plate recognition (LPR) project. We are very excited,” Mallie says.

He says there has already been a slight drop in crime as a result.

Mallie adds the neighbourhood watch is thankful for businesses and individuals in the community who have donated to the organisation, and the community as a whole who helped to get the control room off the ground.

The launch of the control room was held on Saturday 29 June. The event was attended by Franchesca Walker, councillor for ward 26.
