Workshop marks 16 Days

Men are of vital importance when it comes to finding a solution to gender-based violence.

This was one of the messages conveyed at the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department workshop around the issue which was held in Bellville South last Wednesday.

It marked the launch of the City’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

Participants at the gender-based violence workshop included a number of non-governmental organisations working in the field, such as Mosaic, Sonke Gender Justice and the Women of Wisdom movement, as well as the South African Police Service, Justice Department and the Provincial Department of Social Development.

“Violence against women and children in South Africa is an indictment of our society. Sadly, the conversations searching for solutions seldom include men, who, more often than not, are the perpetrators. It is also true that what is meant to be the support system for victims of abuse fails to deliver on expectations too often,” the chairperson of the City’s Portfolio Committee on Safety and Security and Social Services, Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe, said.

“Some strategies are easier to implement than others. Changing the behaviour of men towards vulnerable groups in our society is not an overnight fix. But arming survivors with knowledge, information and access gives them power to extract themselves from bad situations.”
