World Clubfoot Day celebrated
Para-athlete Charne Felix (left) with Karen Moss,

In June people around the world will be encouraged to wear yellow t-shirts in support of World Club Month. To help celebrate the event here in Cape Town, a non-profit organisation, Steps, and other role-players got together at the clubfoot clinic located at the Tygerberg Hospital Orthopaedic Clinic, on Thursday 13 June.

Mothers and fathers from across the city were also at the hospital to share in the celebrations.

According to Steps, one in every 500 babies born in sub-Saharan Africa is born with clubfoot, also known as talipes.

Parents are encouraged to seek medical assistance if their children are diagnosed with this condition, as treatment is available in South Africa which will benefit the child and ensure that they live a comfortable and a normal life.

At the event Charne Felix (32), a world record holding para-athlete and Steps South Africa ambassador, were also in attendance.

Felix, who was born with unilateral clubfoot, is a record holder in long jump and 100m.

World Clubfoot Day, celebrated on 3 June, recognises the work done by doctor Ignacio Ponseti who developed and introduced a non-invasive and gentle method for treating clubfoot, without surgery.
