Young ones kept busy by City during the holidays

The City’s departments offered a variety of activities which encouraged learning in a fun way during the winter holiday.

In a statement issued by the City, councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, said keeping young ones busy and active is no easy feat, but our facilities rose to the occasion to make the cold days fun, interactive and educational.

Learners could choose to either do indoor and outdoor activities at the City’s recreation hubs, attend presentations by the Department of Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department which focused on anti-bullying and child safety, or play in chess tournaments or do craft at City libraries.

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted a variety of programmes which included multi-disciplinary edutainment activities relating to sport, education, arts, culture and recreation.

“This included teaching and developing important life skills such as leadership, educational awareness and personal development.”

Badroodien said this is aimed at encouraging a sense of social cohesion and strengthening resilience among the children.

According to Badroodien, the holiday programmes aim to keep children busy with positive activities to refrain from engaging in anti-social activities.

The Youth Holiday Transversal Programme for 55 selected participants, aged 12 to 14, from facilities in Bloekombos, Joe Slovo Recreation Hall, Scottsdene Community Centre, Scottsville: FF Erasmus Community Hall and Fisantekraal Multipurpose Centre was a highlight of the programme.

“The programme gave young people an opportunity to enjoy a day at the beach and raise their awareness of environmental issues facing our communities,” said Badroodien.

He says the facilities ensure that no one is bored during the holidays.

“I want to commend the staff who pour their hearts and energy into the exhaustive list of activities.

“These programmes not only keep our children safe and busy, but they get the opportunity to socialise and learn new skills,” said Badroodien.
