Youth Day saw a new project for learners

Non-profit organisation Save Our Schools (SOS NPO) shone the light on its Youth Club initiative on Tuesday 16 June.

Part of the Youth Club’s focus is around sustainable and development goals through education and hosting campaigns. The goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone around the world. “These goals were adopted by all United Nations Members of States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Shelly Humphreys of the organisation says. During a Youth Day activation programme, learners from Masibambane and Bloekombos Secondary schools got to witness what the initiative is about.

Partnering with SOS NPO on this initiative were Philani Zama, founder of O Grace Land Home for Girls, media personality Siv Ngesi and Marius Basson of Early Medical School Acceptance Programme, which is an undergraduate and medical school educational programme. Humphreys says the youth club has a great future in the community as the learners showed great enthusiasm.

Part of the day included discussing menstrual hygiene with girls of the community.

“We had the opportunity to meet with girls from Bloekombos who are doing amazing work in terms of menstrual hygiene management,” Humphreys says.

Hygiene packs were also given to girls who attended. “Structures and resources for the club are expected to be concluded in August when learners are back at school.”

She says a budget will be allocated for each of the 17 goals. “We will assist club leaders and members with whatever they will require to carry out the project.”
