Celebrate spring in racing style

With several established superstars back in action and ready for the Cape’s annual “Flower” Power Series meeting on Saturday, Killarney is going to be celebrating the first day of spring in grand style.

One of them is the flamboyant Craig Jarvis who has had to deal with a bakkie-load of problems this season. He will be at the wheel of his new monster V10 Dodge Viper in the Pirelli Sports and GT events. Others to watch here include Gary Kieswetter (Porsche GT3 RS), Steve Humble (Opel Mallock Mk14), Clinton Thorne (Toyota Birkin 7) and Mike Verrier (Nissan Shelby Can-Am).

Then there’s the return of Danie van Niekerk (BMW 325) and former oval track hotshot Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta), in class A of the Mike’s Place Clubman Saloon category. And that’s not all, because behind them is 15-year-old former Stockcar Mini champion Ciara van Niekerk who made an impressive start to her main circuit career last month, in her VW Polo. Her progress will be followed with interest.

On the subject of teenagers, the young Joshua Dolinschek’s single-seater debut last season was impressive until he suddenly went missing. He will line up in his Formula Mygale on Saturday and may challenge more established opponents like Sean le Riche (Formula Renault).

More mature enthusiasts will appreciate the large entry that has been received for the Classic Car events. Here Dave Kopke‘s rare Mazda R100 will be up against Eric Mouton in his magnificent 6.3 litre V8 Chev de Ville and Franco Donadio’s indecently quick Ford Escort Mk1.

Then, with a field that includes a Mazda RX7, as well as two MG A sports cars (one of them a twin cam), and a pair of smaller but equally nostalgic Austin Healey Sprites, the Shatterfix Fine cars are likely to cater for the same group of “golden oldies” in the grandstands.

Former champion Marcel Angel is making a comeback in the one-make V8 Masters line-up where he takes on Richard Schreuder and current “Master” Fabio Tafani.

On the track at the same time, the smaller Makita Supercars are expected to provide some of the best racing of the day. Watch out for drivers like Jarryd Evans, Ryan McCarthy and Andrew Moffitt in this one. With the usual Killarney emphasis on family entertainment, and no shortage of “lebensraum”, mom and the kids will also be well looked after. Here, the pedal go-karts are always a favourite with the “kortbroeke”.

Sponsored by Wingfield Motors with media support from KFM 94.5, the racing is an all-day affair from 09.00, with admission pegged at R80 for adults and R20 for children under 16. There is no charge for kiddies under 12.
