Birth in a holding cell
birth

A 23-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl in a Table View Police Station holding cell this morning (Thursday 8 November), police said.

Table View police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler confirmed in  statement the woman delivered the baby girl at 10:00.

“Police members assisted the woman when she went into labour in one of the holding cells and calmed her until the medics arrived,” she said.

Officers assisted the new mom and baby, ensuring they were as comfortable as possible while waiting on the ambulance services.

“The station bought the new born a couple of items and the mother was given a care package from the Victim Support Room, kindly provided by Women Against Rape,” said Chandler.

At this stage, it is not clear why the woman was in the cell.

Lieutenant-Colonel Hendrik Nel, acting station commander, thanked the two paramedics, from Community Medics, Kevin Jones and Fabio Moreira for safely delivering the baby.

Chandler also said that the mother was grateful to everybody that helped.
