LOCAL artist, Sonwabe Mhletywa from Uitenhage recently collaborated with the founder of Mzansi Art Gallery (MAG) Susan Allin to present ‘Creative Identity’, a national art competition to provide a platform for artists to showcase their art pieces.

MAG, a private Facebook group which was established in July this year, provides emerging and established artists with an online platform to sell their work.

After connecting on Facebook, Allin requested that Mhletywa administer the MAG Facebook group and soon they began working together on the ‘Creative Identity’ competition which they hoped would promote artists in a way that would attract attention.

“This competition will be the first of its kind for MAG. It is based on similar principles to the Sanlam Portrait Award which has inspired the idea for the MAG ‘Creative Identity’ competition,” said Mhletywa.

With her passion for helping artists in Uitenhage, Mhletywa hopes the competition will attract artists in her community to submit their artwork.

She said it was important for her to showcase artwork from artists in Uitenhage because despite the great amount of talent in her community, artists in the area were rarely recognized for their artwork.

“This competition would be a great platform for artists in my community, especially if they are able to make it to the top 10 which will hopefully change things in the Uitenhage art scene” said Mhletywa.

She said artwork submitted for the competition should be two-dimensional and related to the Creative Identity theme.

Submissions for the competition opened on October 1, and will close on December 1.

“Three well-known art experts will judge the competition and announce the final 10 on February 20, 2021, while a gala event will be hosted for the top three on March 6, 2021,” said Mhletywa.

All requirements and rules for the competition are listed on the competition entry form which can be found on Mzansi Art Gallery Facebook group or by requesting a form via email on mzansicreativeart@gmail.com.

Mhletywa said artists can enter the competition by paying an entry fee of R200 and then emailing their entry forms and photographs of their art pieces to mzansicreativeart@gmail.com.

“Artwork created by the top 10 artists will feature at the Alice Art Gallery in Johannesburg for two weeks while the top three winners will receive a cash prize and art material vouchers,” said Mhletywa.

“Our hope for this competition is to give recognition for the winners, give artists a platform to display their art and help to introduce them to the art world.”

For more information contact Susan Allin or Sonwabe Mhletywa on their individual Facebook accounts, request to join the Mzansi Art Gallery Facebook group or email mzansicreativeart@gmail.com.
