Crazy challenge to distribute Bibles

CYCLING 700km in 48 hours is an extreme challenge. But for a team of endurance cyclists this challenge is seen rather as another outdoor adventure to do good to those in need.

“I know it is absolutely crazy. But crazy is what I do ... it’s what I like. Life is there to live to the fullest and if you can do what you like and do it to help others, then do it like crazy,” said Johan Oosthuizen, endurance cyclist from Uitenhage and member of the Fuel On Wheels non-profit organisation.

The challenge, Ride4Bibles, is set to start at 05:00 on Friday, October 23 from the Huis van Heerlikheid (VEK Ebenhaeser) in Uitenhage. The team of endurance cyclists will then head to the N2 then towards Cradock, Middelburg, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville, Kirkwood and back to Uitenhage, covering 700km.

Heinrich Basson, known as a furious cross walker for Christ and member of the Huis van Heerlikheid said the timing of the Bible challenge is perfect.

“October is internationally known as Bible Month, so this challenge fits perfectly in our plan to help raise funds to purchase 5 000 Bibles. There is a great need for Bibles, especially in hospitals,” said Basson.

“Normally the Bibles (English, isi-Xhosa and Afrikaans) that we distribute costs R60, but during Bible Month they are reduced to R49.”

Oosthuizen said the collaboration of the cross walkers and endurance cyclists is because “they are crazy walking hundreds of kilometers with the cross and we do crazy stuff on bikes to help others, so it is obvious, we all like to help others whilst tackling crazy endurance challenges. Together we are stronger and can contribute to more people receiving Bibles.”

Oosthuizen’s previous endurance challenge was covering a 500km gravel route in 24 hours on a mountain bike in support of the Round Table Kirkwood. A total of R30 000 was raised.

According to Pastor Marius Swanepoel from Huis van Heerlikheid, “Visiting patients in hospitals during COVID-19 highlighted the issue of a lack of Bibles in hospitals. Patients asked for Bibles and it was a pity that we did not have enough to distribute to them.

“Therefore we wish, with this Ride4Bibles, to distribute Bibles to hospitals for patients who desperately need to get food for their soul.”

Jaques Thompson, also an endurance cyclist who will join Ride4Bibles said, “To be able to do this is my kind of worshipping. Without the Lord’s blessings we are but nothing. I love cycling and I love the Lord. Combining it is awesome.”

Oosthuizen said they are thankful for the support they received so far and especially from the traffic department who will escort them through the dangerous and steep Olifantskop Pass.

The other cyclists who will be joining Ride4Bibles include TJ Kitching, Louis Janse van Rensburg, Leon Crause, Coenrad Pretorius, John Donaldson, Jacques van Jaarsveld and Steve Momberg.

Cyclists, walkers and runners are invited to join the Ride4Bible team on their last few kilometres returning to Uitenhage.
