Exquisite bonsai trees at show

MORE than 75 bonsai trees will be on display at this weekend’s 50th anniversary Bonsai Show of the Eastern Province Bonsai Society, which is the second oldest bonsai club in South Africa.

A bonsai tree is not a pretty little pot plant. Each tree has taken years of love and care to grow. The Eastern Cape offers various indigenous trees which are favourites among the bonsai fraternity. These trees include acacia, wild peach, spekboom boerboon and wild olive trees.

The art of bonsai is thousands of years old, with paintings of them in the tombs of Egypt and in ancient scrolls of India, Japan and China. Times have changed and new techniques, especially with indigenous trees, have bonsai fans across the world talking.

Apart from the trees on display at the show, there will be trees, pots, tools, wire as well as stands for sale, a repotting service will be available and there will be a beginners’ session.

The 50th anniversary Bonsai Show will be held at the German Club on Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 14:00. Admission is R20/adult, R10/scholar and free for under 12s.
