Metro COVID-19 hotspots surpass 1 000 mark

NELSON Mandela Bay municipality has noted with concern the high COVID-19 confirmed cases that have surpassed the 1 000 mark in a number of hotspots across the metropole.

As at 16 July the metropole recorded 1 111 COVID-19 cases in Uitenhage, 1 036 in KwaNobuhle, 1 033 in KwaZakhele and Motherwell at an alarming 1 956 cases.

NMBM acting mayor Councillor Thsonono Buyeye said the recent statistics presented in a NMB COVID-19 Disaster Management Forum meeting on Tuesday showed that 336 people had died owing to COVID-19 related illnesses.

“It is heart breaking to know that some of the deaths related to COVID-19 deaths are caused by simple negligence by some who choose to roam around and bring COVID-19 to their families, fathers and mothers who strictly observe regulations without fail.

“I call on all, especially the youth to stop roaming around and doing social gatherings, if you are still doing that at this time, you are bringing death to your loved ones,” said Buyeye.

He said it is however encouraging that 4 526 people had successfully beat COVID-19 and recovered.

NMBM COVID-19 Disaster Management chairperson Shane Brown said: “We will hold employers accountable for staff members that are not wearing masks while at work. As difficult as it can be to wear a mask for many hours, it is what is required of us to ensure the safety of ourselves, our families and colleagues.”

Buyeye said, “We urge residents to work with government and adhere to the regulations. We have all seen the impact that alcohol, parties and other social gatherings [have on] the lives of others.

“We believe that the curfew will also reduce these illegal gatherings,” said Buyeye.
