PLAYING street soccer at Jubilee Park has paved the way for a female soccer player of Uitenhage to within four years, since she started with the sport, visit Germany twice to attend soccer related events.
“I’ve never, ever in my life anticipated, envisioned or thought that opportunities like this will come my way. Not once, but twice in the same year,” said Monique Mosi (27) from Swiftresponse Community Empowerment Initiative through Soccer.
She was invited to attend Discover Football’s female soccer empowerment conference from December 4th to 9th in Berlin, Germany. During June this year, she was invited by Dynamo Windrad to attended the Mehr Als Glanz Frauen Bolz WM, an international soccer tournament held in Kassel, Germany.
Ade Adekunle, founder of Swiftresponse, said the overall objective of the initiative is that goal scoring is secondary to empowering youths on grassroot level in formulating their own life goals.
“We also focus on promoting gender equality through soccer, a philosophy we share with Discover Football.”
Monique, a teacher by profession, is one of only ten females across the globe invited to the female football conference as a Young Leader (players aged 18 to 29).
“We will learn more about training methods, strategies and how to promote soccer as a sport for females as well as the philosophy of soccer and how it can be utilized to enhance development in communities,” said Monique.
The main goal of the conference is to share experiences and bring women together from different backgrounds, to learn from each other, to strengthen mutual solidarity as well as women’s rights and to build a strong network.
“If you think of South Africa and European countries, you can’t compare. So I feel honoured. Small me from what they regard as a jungle, is offered the opportunity to add value to an international soccer conference.
“Soccer as a sport creates influencers and leaders. What I would like to bring back is to further promote soccer among girls and females.
“It builds character, teaches you about emotional intelligence, team spirit and it brings hope,” said Monique.
Sport is powerful. She referred to what Prince Harry said when he was at the changing rooms after the Rugby World Cup final with the Springboks.
“It was very profound what he said, ‘that he could not think of a better nation that deserves this World Cup’ … and guess what. It is so true. Winning the Rugby World Cup united us, it changed perspectives.
“Sport promotes fairness, oneness within a team, to focus and play for one another and your country,” said Monique.
Adekunle said he is very proud and excited about Monique’s passion for sport and especially soccer.
“Seeing her progressing is giving me joy beyond words. It shows me Swiftresponse is working, we are achieving not only goals by kicking the ball, but in life, developing young leaders.”
He thanked Galaxy Bingo Uitenhage for their commitment in supporting the Swiftresponse and in believing also in the development of young leaders through sport.
All interested in joining Swiftresponse can on Tuesdays and Thursday from 15:00 pitch at the Jubilee Park sports fields and start their journey of changing their perspectives of life.
