State of Generation Address: Know better to do better

THE 2020 State of the Generation Address (Soga) delivered by PrisonDent, a character impersonating the contradiction of a president or prisoner, focussed on incarceration versus education.

“27 Years of incarceration have built one man’s future behind walls through education, motivation, vision, dedication and commitment. It has built a great liberated nation as Nelson Mandela visualized it, but we are about to lose that vision,” said PrisonDent in his opening statement of Soga.

“Now is the time to turn back the clock of a nation who believed in possibilities. Let’s take charge and turn our nation from a Junk Nation to a Hunk Nation.”

Brian Davids from Uitenhage is an employee at the department of correctional services and the creator of PrisonDent, a motivational character striving to bring along change, encouraging the youth to “know better for they have to do better ... as the youth is the future of our beloved country.”

He said, whilst President Cyril Ramaphosa will tonight focus on the state of the nation in his address, PrisonDent focusses specifically on the youth, the next generation of South Africans.

“The youth have to know better by building strong bridges to cross their tomorrows. They have to conquer gangsterism, drugs, xenophobia, dropping out of school, early pregnancies, violence in schools and a low self esteem.

“They need to change their mindsets as currently the future does not look good.

“But, it is in the hands of our youth, our next generation, to bring along change where Madiba’s values of peace, forgiveness, compassion and human dignity flourish.”

PrisonDent concluded his Soga saying: “Prior to ‘94 it was said that we cannot play normal sport in an abnormal society.

“Today we cannot practise normal education in a violent society. If you know better young South Africans, do better for the next 27 years.”

  • The 2020 State of the Nation Address (Sona) will be delivered by the President tonight. And the theme for this year’s Sona is following up on commitments: making your future work better.

On February 11th, South Africa celebrated the 30th anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

Madiba’s values of peace, forgiveness, compassion and human dignity will guide Parliament’s programme for the year.
