Assets impounded

Due to non-payment, security companies contracted to the Matjhabeng Municipality have had municipal assets to the value of R15 million impounded by the sheriff.

The municipal manager of Matjhabeng, Thabiso Tsoaeli, met with the security companies on Tuesday (08/05) afternoon in an effort to resolve the impasse.

“We are confident about the outcome of the meeting,” said Kgojane Matutle, Matjhabeng spokesperson.

André Styger, DA councillor, says this is only the beginning.

“Things are going to get a lot worse unless action is taken. Creditors’ attachment of council property should be expected. As soon as the matter with the security companies is resolved, other creditors will follow suite,” says Styger.

He says the only reason Matjhabeng remained operational in the past decade was because money that was supposed to be paid to bulk suppliers (Eskom and Sedibeng Water) was used to pay contractors and salaries.

“Now that the bulk suppliers are demanding what is owing to them, there is not enough left to fund the already bankrupt system and the wheels will come off.

“One thing should be very clear and that is the fact that despite the economic downturn in the Goldfields, there is still enough money and economic activity for the municipality to function and fulfil its purpose,” Styger says.

“The reality is, however, that as long as council resources are treated like a pigsty feeding trough for the politically connected and as long as those who are able to pay for services, but refuse to do so, are not called to task, there will not be any improvement.

“Although this will sound like political opportunism, it cannot be denied that Matjhabeng needs an urgent intervention which can only be a government financial bailout action by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, or our residents saying enough is enough next time they elect their leaders,” Styger says.
