Cables found in shack

The Welkom police have arrested a woman for being in possession of copper cables and other property which was said to have been stolen from the Matjhabeng Municipality in June.

“The 31-year-old woman was found in possession of five pallets of clear view fence, five fence poles, a roll of copper wire weighing 20,5 kg, two Ryobi grinders, one Dewalt drill machine and a 23 m long electric cord,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, liaison officer for the Welkom Police Cluster.

On Thursday (04/07) the members of the Public Order Policing reaction team received a tip-off about a person in one of the shacks in Phomolong Village who was allegedly in possession of copper cables.

The items were identified by officials of the Matjhabeng Municipality.

“Cable theft in Matjhabeng has become critical.

“The criminals target areas such as Odendaalsrus, Virginia, Welkom and Bronville, where copper cable costing millions of rand has already been stolen,” says Thakeng.
