Centre helps victims of abuse

The newly established Segobo Victim Support Centre in Thabong is already looking after more than 50 families, which entails some 500 people.

“These are the victims of abuse – from sexual and emotional abuse to physical and child abuse,” says Mojalefa Segobo, chairman of the centre.

“The victims we care for range from children to the elderly.”

The Segobo Victim Support Centre is a registered non-profit organisation.

Segobo says food parcels are supplied to more than 50 families on a daily basis.

“We need donations of food, clothing, and even building materials. We will use the building material where people have lost their homes,” he says.

The centre also needs a permanent site from which to operate and store donations, says Segobo.

“There are so many traumatic incidents in our community. We care for the 14-year-old girl and her eight-year-old sister who were the victims of a shack fire last month. Their mother and two siblings died in the fire, and their father later died in hospital. These children are now being cared for by their aunt,” says Segobo.

“The younger one is still very traumatised, and says she hears her father calling her. She is starting to do badly at school.

“There are so many people who need our help, and we try to assist where we can.”

Once the centre has a permanent structure from which to operate, Segobo can incorporate councillors and other support systems to assist the victims, especially the women and the children.

Call Segobo on 073-529-5223, Lucky Mahlohla, marketing director, on 063-245-7914, or Vincent Segobo, managing director, on 065-508-8956 for more information.
