What is Polio

Polio (short for poliomyelitis) is an infectious disease. The virus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.

It can be fatal, and mostly affects children under five. It is incurable, but can be prevented by vaccination.

“Since 1985 Rotary has embarked on a mission to stop the spread of polio worldwide by mass vaccination of children.

Rotary launched its PolioPlus program to tackle the global eradication of polio.

At that time there were 125 polio-endemic countries, with 350 000 cases of polio present.

Over 2,5 billion children have been vaccinated worldwide.

More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and resources to end polio.

There are only two countries namely, Afghanistan and Pakistan where the poliovirus has not been eradicated. Africa was declared polio free this year,” says Jill Lombard, president of Rotary Club of Flamingo Welkom.

“Please support Rotary to help eradicate this deadly virus, by joining our fundraiser.

“Rotary entered into a partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007.

“This foundation will give two dollars for every one that Rotary donates,” says Lombard.

World Polio Day will be celebrated on the 24 October.

Videos must not exceed one minute.

Entries cost R25 per person and all proceeds will go towards the eradication of polio (#endpolionow).

The closing date for the Goldfields Challenge is 30 September.
