Club celebrates 40 years

The Welkom Old Auto Club celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

In 1979, a few enthusiasts from Welkom joined hands in establishing one of the Goldfields’ oldest treasures, the Welkom Old Auto Club.

The club was founded so that people with a passion for old cars can socialise.

One of the first highlights of the club was a tea party held in Central Park, and according to sources members of the club where dressed up as the Mafia.

Their first rally was called the Trek Rally and covered 190 km from Odendaalsrus, Virginia and Theunissen.

The club has had very rare vehicles throughout the years. These include a 1946 Peugeot, 1938 Fargo 3-ton lorry, 1946 Daimler DB18 (ex-Royal Tour of 1947), 1958 Lloyd Alexander 600 Cabriolet, 1958 Daf 600, 1957 Heinkel Cabin Cruiser and a 1917 Model T Ford Pickup. The 1947 Bristol bus, which was the first municipal bus, was also donated to the club.

Since then the Sandstone Estate near Ficksburg became the custodian of the bus. This bus also featured in two movies: The power of one and Cry, the beloved country.

Over the past 16 years the club’s annual Cars in the Park event has grown from strength to strength, from a show starting with 99 cars to what it has become today.

The club also does its part for charity. Every year it hosts a function at the Welkom Retirement Village and this year the St Francis Haven was included. The old folks love the cars and the trip down memory lane. A Christmas function was also held for underprivileged kids.

At this year’s event on Saturday (05/10) there will be entertainment for the whole family, which includes food stalls, kids entertainment, pony rides and a beer tent.

For the braver there will be a mechanical bull and Brian Emmenis of Capital Sounds and his team will make sure to put the day in the correct vibe with the best entertainment.

A few helicopters will also be exhibited on the day.

Vehicles older than 20 years may be exhibited for free. Each exhibitor will receive a 40th birthday celebrations certificate for the day.

Gates open at 08:00 at the Welkom Technical High School sports grounds and entrance costs R20 per person and R10 per car in the public parking area.
