Cultivate a spirit that focuses on the grapes, not the giants

In Numbers 13 Moses instructs 12 men to go spy out the Promised Land.

Only two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, return with an optimistic attitude and the belief that they are well able to overcome the Canaanites.

Unfortunately, the remaining spies’ bad report discourages the children of Israel and delays them from entering the Promised Land.

While two spies focused on the grapes, the promise of a future, ten focused on the giants, the problems they had to overcome.

The giants of murder, violence, corruption and poverty have been plundering our nation for many years.

What differentiated Joshua and Caleb from the other spies?

God defined them as men with a “different spirit” (Numbers 14:25).

They did not disregard the fact that giants roamed the land, but they did not focus on them either. Instead, they believed the promise and knew that God would be on their side to overcome every giant that stood in their way.

As South Africans we cannot ignore the giants in our country. So, what do we do?

Do we magnify the one giant and ignore the other, whilst a giant that aims to polarise and segregate our nation smirkingly looks on?

Or do we take down giants and focus on the promise that the Goldfields is a promised land, one that it is overflowing with opportunity and wealth?

I believe change starts with us having a different spirit and attitude – and the belief that, with God, we can stomp on every giant.

Read Isaiah 60:15-18 to strengthen this belief. Heinrich Lourens is a pastor at CRC Welkom.
