Exhibition captures

The Naudeville group from Welkom held the first and unique Welkom Heritage Exhibition.

This exclusive exhibition was held from Tuesday, 24 September, to Wednesday, 2 October, at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre.

It featured more than 90 photos that show the development of Welkom from a bare veld to the city it is today.

The exhibition is supported by archival material of libraries in the Free State, companies and individuals.

“There was great interest from people in Welkom and beyond on the exhibition. A lot of people that included senior citizens, young people, students and town planners visited our exhibition,” says James Mlambo, curator of the exhibition.

In line with this year’s theme of Heritage Month “Celebrating South Africa’s literary classics in the year of indigenous languages”, visitors were encouraged to use an indigenous language to write down their thoughts about the photos at the exhibition.

The Naudeville group started as an online space interested in sharing news and historical information about Welkom. Additional information about their activities is available on their website and social media platforms.
