The Lejweleputswa District has recorded a total of 10 652 laboratory confirmed Covid-19 cases in the district spanning a period from 16 March to 10 October.

In this period 8 136 cases have been recorded in Matjha­beng, 785 in Nala, 789 in Tswelopele, 585 in Masilonyana and 357 in Tokologo.

In the past week 73 new cases have been recorded in the district.

According to Zweli Qamkana, communication officer for Lejweleputswa District Health Services, the daily incident rate per 100 000 of the population is 11,4%. The number of deaths stands at 362, which gives the district a fatality rate of 3,4%. This remains the highest in the province.

A total of 1 852 133 screenings have been performed in the district since the beginning of the lockdown in March, and 14 084 people have been tested.

The district health services have identified 9 507 contacts to be traced in this period, of which they found 9 361. This brings the success rate to 98%. According to Qamkana, 146 contacts are still outstanding.

  • The premier of the Free State, Sisi Ntombela, the MEC for Health, Montseng Tsiu, and the director-general of the Free State Provincial Government, Kopung Ralikontsane, have all tested positive for Covid-19.

The Free State Provincial Government emphasises that although the country has moved to alert level 1, the fight against the virus is far from over.

“We are still in the midst of a deadly pandemic,” Ntombela said.
