Focus falls on eyesight
World Sight Day was celebrated at the Bongani Hosp

World Sight Day is observed worldwide annually on the second Thursday in October.

An event to draw the attention to a range of eyesight issues that include blindness and visual impairment, took place at the Bongani Hospital in Welkom on 11 October.

Community members were also educated on blindness prevention.

People who suffer from vision impairment due to uncorrected refractive error, or who needed an eye examination or a pair of glasses, were also assisted.

The staff of the eye clinic at the hospital donated spectacles to members of the community and also sunglasses to people with albinism.

  • “World Sight Day is a great opportunity to transform the lives of people struggling with eye sight problems,” says Keke Maile of the Society for the Blind. According to the website of World Sight Day, 36 million people around the world are blind. The figure could rise to 115 million by 2050, but 75% of sight loss can be cured or prevented.
