For the love of running

More than 700 athletes participated in the annual Valentine’s night race, hosted by the Harmony Striders.

Athletes dressed in red to celebrate love on Friday, 14 February, starting the race at the Welkom Square shopping centre.

Athletes could participate in a 10 km and a 4 km race. All finishers received a medal.

Jonas Soke from the Central University of Technology (CUT) won the men’s 10 km race in a time of 30:28. Neo Segopo was second and Gift Matoli third.

The women’s 10 km winner was Rebecca Lethoko from the Sibanye Running Club. She finished the race in a time of 42:39.

Palesa Mafanya was second and Petrie Venter third.

Pedro Maqiwaka took the honours in the junior category, while Piet Mpheteng was the winner in the category for men, 40 years and older.

Flippie Kotze won in the category for men, 50 years and older, and Jeffrey Gcelu was the overall men’s 60 years and older winner.

Suenette Heyneke won the women’s walk.

Rebecca Lethoko was the overall winner in the category for women, 40 years and older, Anne-Marie De Wet won the women’s 50 years and older category, and Annelie Viviers was the overall winner of the 60 years and older category for women.

“The organisers are very pleased with the number of athletes that particiapted this year. We are already planning next year’s race,” says Rina Nel of the Harmony Striders Club.
