Girl (12) to climb Kilimanjaro

A 12-year-old girl of the St Helena Primary School in Welkom is set to climb Kilimanjaro on 21 September with her gaurdian, Simonne Lamont (55). They will take on the mountain with 21 other South Africans.

Trinity-Sue Baillie, a Gr. 6 learner, says she can no longer sit on the side and watch the impact that bullying has on the vulnerable and the voiceless.

With the trip she will raise awareness and funds for Share Tanzania, an organisation based at Kilimanjaro, which seeks to fight poverty in this area and improve the lives of vulnerable children.

Trinity-Sue, who was crowned as Miss Goldfields Junior in 2018, says with her attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, she not only wants to put bullying under the magnifying glass, but also to raise awareness for all who are defenceless like children, animals and elderly people.

“I have spoken to schools in the Welkom area to get involved in my “No Bully Day” events to take a stand against bulling,” says Trinity-Sue.

Lamont says bullying is close to Trinity-Sue because she was also bullied and knows exactly how it feels.

“They called her the most terrible names, teased her and no one wanted to play with her during breaks.

“It got so bad that she didn’t want to go to school anymore, but she learned to stand up for herself,” says Lamont.

Trinity-Sue hopes to set an example for other children and that they will see that they are never too young to make a difference.

The team of two started preparations to climb Kilimanjaro in March and since May they walked 5 km three times per week with their full gear.

At the beginning of August they started walking more with 10 km to 12 km five days a week.

Simonne and Trinity-Sue will be leaving on Friday, 13 September.
