Girls given the edge

Born in Welkom, Pearl Motaung-Mlangeni attended the Unitas High School, which is where she discovered her love for the hospitality industry.

This school offers hotel keeping and tourism studies.

Motaung-Mlangeni, the deputy general manager at Tsogo Sun, is hoping to uplift her home town through reinvented tourism and hospitality projects.

“A hotel is in the pipeline, which will create jobs and contribute to the economic growth of the town,” she says.

After matriculating at Unitas, Motaung-Mlangeni pursued her formal qualification in Hospitality Management.

She realised the inequality in the industry and how high positions were occupied by men.

She dedicated her time to educate and empower young women to take up their space in the boardroom.

Passionate about development and mentorship, Motaung-Mlangeni runs group sessions with young hoteliers to assist them in addressing challenges they face in the industry and opportunities that are on their way.

During this difficult time caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Motaung-Mlangeni has dedicated her time to help those who have lost their jobs. She assists job seekers with reviewing their CVs, and by assisting them to prepare for interviews.

Being a mentor and leader, she continues to impact the lives of the girls in schools through her foundation, The Pearl Motaung Foundation.

“I believe it starts by ensuring girls never miss a school day. Periods are not a choice,” she says.

Her foundation donates sanitary products and cosmetics to less fortunate girls.

The foundation has also embarked on the #feedafamily campaign, raising funds to supply food hampers to the less fortunate.

Motaung-Mlangeni is being recognised by the bodies that are advocating for women empowerment and women in leadership.

She was a finalist in the Standard Bank Top Women Awards in the category Top Young Achiever under 40 in 2019 and 2020.
