Illegal dumping escalates

The illegal dumping of refuse and household waste in Matjhabeng has escalated out of control, and law enforcement officers have their hands full trying to curb this scourge.

Residents are dumping garden and household refuse in every nook, cranny and open field they can find. The problem has been compounded by the municipal waste site at Bronville being totally inoperable due to major upgrades.

According to Vicky Morris, Matjhabeng councillor, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality is busy upgrading and rehabilitating the landfill site at a cost of some R50 million. In the meantime, there is nowhere for residents to dump there refuse.

On Friday (27/09) the Welkom police caught a Thabong resident dumping garden refuse in Lindsey Road, Welkom. He was apprehended and the Matjhabeng Bylaw Unit was summoned. The man’s vehicle and trailer were impounded, and he was given a R2 000 fine.

Supt Bokvel Pietersen has issued a stern warning to residents that illegal dumpers will be brought to book.

“We will continue to impound vehicles when we find them transgressing the municipal bylaws,” said Pietersen.

Over the weekend (26 and 28 September) municipal vehicles patrolled Lakeview, Long Road, Lindsey Road and Flamingopark to monitor illegal dumping.

In addition, the municipality is clamping down on roadside car dealerships.

“Notices will be served on all vehicles that are being advertised for sale on our circles, sidewalks, traffic islands and other open spaces of the municipality.

“These vehicles will individually be issued a fine of R2 000 per vehicle and owners will be liable for the towing fees as well as and including the impoundment fees,” says Pietersen.
