Matjhabeng is a cesspool

Matjhabeng is an environmental hazard to its residents with large tracts of land, dams, the marshlands and pans all having been turned into vast cesspools.

Accordingto the dictionary a cesspool can be used for the temporary collection and storage of faeces, excreta or faecal sludge as part of an on-site sanitation system.

Not here in Matjhabeng. Our uninhabitable situation is not temporary. Sewage and faeces have become part of our everyday lives.

From Welkom through Thabong (north and south and east and west) to Bronville and Virginia and then across to Hennenman and back over to Odendaalsrus, every town and township in this municipality is flooded by either flowing sewage, or the other extreme – fresh clean drinking water which dams and gushes from burst pipes on every street.

Editorial Comment

The constant flow of water (either clean or sewer) has made our streets untravellable (meaning: unsuitable for, or hostile to, travel).

On the Klippan Road, just past the turn-off to the old nursery and the official sewage works, one is confronted by a dam of sewage in the road (not the sewage works).

This is so established that water fowl and water birds are seen there. Keep in mind this is a road which leads to the renowned golfing destination, the Oppenheimer Golf Course.

On Saturday (25/07), while following up complaints from residents, Vistadiscovered the municipal contractor in the middle of the road, unashamedly emptying a sewage truck’s contents in broad daylight, and in full view of motor vehicles, who then had to turn back and find an alternative route to their destinations.

The municipality’s official answer to this: “Investigations are underway to establish all the facts pertaining to the alleged sewage spillage by the service provider.”

The alleged spillage? He was parked in the middle of the flooded road literally emptying the sewage tanker. He was photographed and a short video was made. Matjhabeng, what more do you need?

From what Vistasaw, he was in clear violation of the National Environmental Act, the Water Act and the regulations dictating the disposal of hazardous waste.
