Mother arrested after leaving child in locked car

Police warn parents not to leave their children alone in a locked car.

This follows after a mother left her 6-year-old daughter alone in a car in the parking lot of a well-known shopping mall in the city.

On Monday (04/11) at about 15:30 car guards at the shopping centre noticed that the child was alone in the vehicle in extreme heat.

They immediately called the authorities to the scene. The police helped the child out of the vehicle and paramedics treated her for heat exhaustion.

The 22-year-old mother was arrested when she came to her car at about 17:30 after doing shopping in the mall.

“We would like to sternly warn parents that they must never leave their children inside their vehicles, especially when they do shopping.

“We want to send a clear-cut message to motorists doing shopping to stop this tendency of locking children in their vehicles, otherwise they will face the mighty hand of the law, like this young mother who was arrested instantly,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson.

The mother will soon appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court for child neglect.
