Organisations to help victims

According to Statistics SA’s 2016 Demographic and Health Survey released in 2017, on average, one in five South African women older than 18 has experienced physical violence, but the picture of gender-based attacks varies according to marital status and wealth.

Four in ten divorced or separated women reported physical violence, as has one in three women in the poorest households.

Numerous organisations around South Africa provide services such as counselling, temporary shelter and legal help to people in abusive relationships.

  • In the Goldfields abused women and children can turn to organisations like: The Hope Life Centre, one of the projects of House of Hope, assists women in crisis situations.
