Police inform learners through awareness campaign

An awareness campaign to highlight the prevalence of crime was held at the Thabiso Skills Development Centre in Thabong on 12 February.

Under the leadership of Capt. Stephen Thakeng, members of the Welkom Police Cluster’s communication unit, comprising of Const. Itumeleng Setai, Const. Kethabile Mofokeng and Lebo Lechesa conducted the campaign.

Thakeng spoke about the different careers within the police and how to enlist in the police. He also spoke about crime. Thakeng encouraged learners to be cautious when using ATM’s, and to never accept help from strangers.

“You must be able to give a description of the suspect if you are ever robbed, or observe suspicious looking people or vehicles,” said Thakeng.

Mofokeng advised learners to refrain from using drugs and joining gangs.

“Once you are a member of gangs, there is no more turning back. You might end up killing and robbing people. You will be arrested and face the might of the law. This will prevent you from getting jobs, because you will have a criminal record”.

Lechesa provided learners with crime prevention hints regarding rape.

“Women should avoid walking alone at night or in the early hours of the morning. They should immediately report rape to the police when it happens as this will help with investigations,” said Lechesa.

Setai spoke about Public Order Policing. He informed the learners about crowd management and the disadvantages of unlawful public violence where people take advantage of looting shops during protest actions.
